Face à une Super NES nettement supérieure à la Megadrive, Sega décide de sortir une extension pour cette dernière, le Mega CD. Cette extension se branche sous la Megadrive (donc elle fait les mêmes dimensions) et dispose d’une lecteur CD du type tiroir, pour des raisons de problèmes mécaniques, une seconde version sortira peu de temps plus tard, cette version se branchant toujours sous la Megadrive propose le lecteur CD juste à coté de cette dernière avec une ouverture sur le dessus (comme sur Dreamcast, GameCube, Playstation), doublant ainsi la largeur de l’ensemble.
